My name is Mariyam Hussein. I am a visual artist based in Cairo, Egypt.

My art journey began in 2017 when I got invited to take part in a group exhibition in Nairobi, Kenya. Since then, I have participated in many exhibitions. I have also sold many paintings through my Instagram account. I am currently working on a series of commissioned paintings.

My style of painting is contemporary realism. I am inspired by the works of old masters. I am particularly drawn towards the works of Turner, Rembrandt and Claude Monet. The main body of my work consists of flora, fauna, Islamic architectural paintings and still life. Conveying mood and atmosphere is essential to my paintings. Capturing the essence of the subject onto canvas is what excites me and keeps me motivated to paint.

I work with oils, acrylics and watercolours. The subject of the painting dictates the materials and mediums I use. I have a great appreciation for natural materials as well as locally-sourced materials. And I try and incorporate them into my work.

I gather inspiration from my surroundings, travels and the city I live in. I am interested in Islamic art and architecture and particularly enjoy reading about Fatimid art. The use of gold leaf in my Islamic paintings is inspired by looking at medieval Christian iconography and paintings in museums. Since moving to Cairo I have also used papyrus in my art.

My journey as an artist has only begun. There is a lot more to explore. I am excited to see where this road takes me.
